 My first goathead deflation -- a slow leak in my thermarest pad last night, no doubt a goathead sticking through tarp and tent floor. Between that, the madcap traffic 50 yards away, coyotes, and parking lot lights didn't sleep much. Traveled this morning  through the San Carlos Apache reservation, a whole lot of nothing. Eventually the bumpy shoulder improved, but the headwind got worse. After the reservation desert the landscape slowly turned greener, river irrigating cotton fields Another long tiring day, only 72 miles.

Had to push this afternoon, since I was cooking and my co-cook Linda was far behind, even getting caught in late date shower. So I went shopping with leader Beth Ann for eggs (3 dozen),frozen hash browns, bread, hummus, pita chips, Tillamook cheese, salad. And a watermelon, in case we had the energy/appetite afterwards. Which we didn't. I also got a cheap foam pad, no risk of a flat. Sorry no pictures,moving too quickly doing food prep and then food consumption, but folks seemed to like it. Just dirtied too many pots, and containers. Exhausted from cleanup and all of the above.

Tonight indoors at RV rec center, since threat of rain.

North of Yuma, day 4

 Can see the lights of Yuma AZ on horizon from our hilltop crappy RV "resort" -- barren, hot, junky, rocky "lawn" where we are camping, one working toilet, 2 showers. And no Internet. Apparently a military facility at some distant point, explaining the uncompleted bunkers dug into hillside. Hot bumpy riding today 72 miles on an untested route, a last minute relocation requiring a water stop by the van on the side of the road halfway, no services for 46 miles, just desert. And this unvetted camping place, for which we are guinea pigs  Sore butt, legs, arms, neck. And tightness in jaws from nerve wracking and punishing bumps and broken pavement. Even ended up on dirt or gravel farm roads as we approached town of Bard end of day, cotton, hay, and lots of date trees. Ok, enough complaining. We had to have pizza and beer to make up for van/trailer hitch breaking, requiring services of tow truck, but all better by 6:30 pm.

SGI Christian Retreat Center, St. George Island

A beautiful short day, so a late leisurely start at the Airbnb since only going 42 miles and it was just 45 degrees at 9am. Chuck made pancakes and eggs again, and there were leftovers from last night's feast plus the usual breakfast spread. We're marching on our stomachs for sure lately, this last week of the trek. Leave a bit after 10:30. After Port St Joe comes Florida's "forgotten coast" -- undeveloped stretch for 30 miles or so until Apalachicola, nice small historic town where Chuck and I stop for coffee/hot chocolate and lunch two hours later, sitting in the bright sunshine outside cafe. Then cross two long bridges and causeways over to St George Island (thus the "SGI") where we are staying at this Baptist church retreat. Nice little beach and lawn. Option is to tent outside with access to two cabins for the bathrooms, or individually pay an extra $15 to actually sleep in bunk inside. Cagle Recreation Area TX

 Apparently we're north of Houston, about an hour away, other than that no real sense of where we are. Heading north and east through south Central Texas, and that fierce west north west wind was mostly from the side, but occasionally enough of a tail wind to make today's 69 miles fun. Last of the rolling hills as we approach the "pine tree curtain" which separates central from eastern TX according to Mike, owner of the Independence General Story. And these old pumps still work. No wifi of course, barely a bar of reception here in this fishing area in the middle of Sam Houston national forest. And the winds had knocked out power so no shower before had to go shopping in New Waverly. Not much selection at Sam Slotts's grocery, feed, fertilizer. Went for pasta and a few veggies, lots of leftovers and parmesan went into it a desperation meal. Donna had two friends stopping by, fortunately bringing appetizers and dessert.
