Silver City NM Rest Day

Silver City is a hip update to a western mining town, founded 1870. Curious claims to fame: Billy the Kid lived here, his family's cabin burned down but there is a replica, courtesy of Hollywood -- Ron Howard filmed a movie here.

Second claim is that devasting floods washed away the original Main St, leaving the "big ditch", named after the Panama Canal, now a creek 55 feet below grade, nice little river way park.

Third claim to fame: Gila Bike & Hike shop, where everyone on our tour had some service done or bought gear. I got my front tire trued (dang CA and AZ crap roads) and bought 2 more spare tubes, supposedly "self sealing". Plus a real tent, 2 person, free standing, separate rainfly, Big Agnes "seed house". Will ship my super lightweight AT tent home, just not up for the weather around here. 


And a final claim to fame, what else but a brew pub to visit this evening. Excellent beer, "happy hippy" dinner (portobello mushroom, cheese, lots of veggies, and onion rings of course). On the way back I got to see how the other half live in RV parks: Tamara and her daughter share a deluxe tricked out Prevost coach next door, with walnut paneling and cabinets. Wow. A land yacht.


So a fun filled rest day, doing chores and repairs-- shoegoo to fix flapping soles on bike shoes (heck, only 16 years old, just like my bike so plenty of life left) and the leak in my thermarest pad.

St Augustine finale

  Cloudy and a little windy but a fine day to hit the beach. Just 32 miles, fortunately much of it on a bike path, before the last stretch of highway and then a few hectic city miles. Group of noisy conservative demonstrators at the last bridge blessed us as we rode past trying to ignore their signs. To the beach, a front end dip, some champagne and some family greetings. No one went swimming, surf was definitely up. Today definitely reinforced my convictions: I really enjoy bike paths and am really, really, really tired of busy highways and crappy roads with no shoulders. Don't get me started on RV parks. Glad this trip is finished. The hotel hot tub awaits. Unfortunately it's broken. And this area is Florida's potato capital, according to this barn sign. Some quick notes on cyclo-touring after 70. 1. North of Yuma, day 4

 Can see the lights of Yuma AZ on horizon from our hilltop crappy RV "resort" -- barren, hot, junky, rocky "lawn" where we are camping, one working toilet, 2 showers. And no Internet. Apparently a military facility at some distant point, explaining the uncompleted bunkers dug into hillside. Hot bumpy riding today 72 miles on an untested route, a last minute relocation requiring a water stop by the van on the side of the road halfway, no services for 46 miles, just desert. And this unvetted camping place, for which we are guinea pigs  Sore butt, legs, arms, neck. And tightness in jaws from nerve wracking and punishing bumps and broken pavement. Even ended up on dirt or gravel farm roads as we approached town of Bard end of day, cotton, hay, and lots of date trees. Ok, enough complaining. We had to have pizza and beer to make up for van/trailer hitch breaking, requiring services of tow truck, but all better by 6:30 pm.

Big Easy rest day

Preservation Hall. After a very cold and dewy night and the time change falling back adding an extra hour to huddle in sleeping bags, we rode the van into New Orleans to spend four hours having fun.  After walking around in the sun for an hour or so I met up with my ex-inlaws Suzanne and Mark for delicious pizza and then ice cream. Very nice to catch up with them and family news.
